History
In late 1009, at Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh), Ly Cong Uan was enthroned, found the Ly dynasty. A year later (1010), he moved the capital to Dai La and renamed it Thang Long (Rising Dragon).

On the foundation of Dai La, Ly Cong Uan built a new capital. The capital was limited by three rivers, the Red River to the East, the To Lich River to the North and West, and Kim Nguu River to the South.
The capital area near the West Lake, the place for king's meetings, was surrounded by a fortress called Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. The rest area was civilian area, divided into wards which were the ward of agriculture, ward of industry and ward of business; they were placed separately or mixed together. Both areas were called Citadel surrounded by an earthen fortress built on the dike of 3 rivers above.
In the civil area, there were many religious architecture: in 1028, Dong Co temple was built on the bank of To Lich river, in 1049 Dien Huu Pagoda (One Pillar pagoda) in the west of the citadel, in 1057 Bao Thien tower pagoda was built, in 1070 Temple of Literature and the school for the prince which later was built as Quoc Tu Giam - the first university of Vietnam. Giang Vo temple, in 1170 became shooting yard, located in the south of the Citadel.
For about one hundred years, after becoming the capital, Thang Long has been built as the center of politics, economy, culture of the country. Ramparts, dikes, many types of palace architecture, folk festivals, culture, religion... are blended with natural beauty and make the unique appearance of the Citadel.
In Thang Long, in the period of prosperity, Ly dynasty boosted the construction and defense of the country on a large scale, opening the era of civilization Dai Viet in Vietnam's history.
In XII and XIII century, based on independent and solid consistency, the economy and culture of Dai Viet was thriving. The threats from the Northern and Southern dynasties, especially the invasion of Tong Dynasty (1075-1077) were removed, contributed to protect the safety of Thang Long Citadel and crowded plain area.
Thang Long people helped the people of the country created such a civilization and achieve many victories to protect the country; the two typical heroes were Ly Thuong Kiet and Y Lan Queen.
Ly Thuong Kiet (1019-1105), born in Thai Hoa ward on the south bank of West Lake, organized and successfully led the resistance war against the Tong invaders (1075-1077).
Y Lan Queen, the first name was Yen Lan, the last name was Le, born in Sui village, Duong Xa commune, Gia Lam district, was a queen good at taking care of the people. She issued many policies on agricultural development and took care of the poor.
Literature of Thang Long under Ly Dynasty had many works becoming the pride of Vietnam, such as Nam Quoc Son Ha, poetries of Man Giac, Quang Nghiem, Khong Lo.../.
